What Is Dual Citizenship in Bangladesh?

Bangladesh allows its citizens to acquire the citizenship of specified countries without losing Bangladeshi nationality, provided the formalities are followed. People who were born Bangladeshi and later acquired another nationality can continue to be treated as Bangladeshi citizens for many purposes, including holding property, if their status is properly documented.

The NVR Endorsement

NVR stands for "No Visa Required". It is a stamp or sticker in your foreign passport, issued on the basis of your Bangladeshi origin, that works as a visa-free entry permit. It also proves to Bangladeshi authorities that you retain your link to Bangladesh. Many land offices, banks and the Immigration authority ask for it.

Who Is Eligible?

  • People born as Bangladeshi citizens who have acquired the nationality of an eligible country.
  • Children of Bangladeshi citizens, subject to the Citizenship Act and policy at the time.
  • Spouses of Bangladeshis may get separate long-term visa categories, which are different from NVR.

Always check the current list of eligible countries and conditions, because policy can change by Cabinet or circular.
